The ArtWrite Collective collaborates with nonprofits and other organizations to facilitate arts programming that stimulates creativity, nourishes resiliency, develops life skills, cultivates internal assets, and expands external resources for youth in our community. We celebrate stories of strength and see youth as resources in our community.

hosted at Arts + Literature Laboratory (2021 Winnebago St, Madison, WI)
About this Program:
The Youth ArtWrite Collective is designed as a creative leadership development program for middle and high school students in writing, visual arts, and community art practice hosted at Arts + Literature Laboratory (2021 Winnebago St, Madison, WI). These afterschool groups will cultivate life skills while encouraging youth to grow together as active artists. As a free program, we will prioritize accessibility and center the voices of youth most impacted by structural inequities in our community.
Through art programming that is informed by student interests, we promote inquiry and expression, positive self regard, critical thinking, skills to navigate life transitions, and a high value on social justice. ArtWrite will support young artists through quality arts education with professionally experienced artists, a social setting among peers with common interests, and the mutual trust that they are capable. Artists will learn through weekly prompts in the inspiring environment of the Arts + Literature Laboratory while working towards culminating projects to present to the public at the end of the semester.
Participating in this program has a lot of perks for youth! Youth teams will have access to a supplies fund that they control. Youth will develop public projects that could contribute to their resumes, portfolios, or applications, and that will mark their place as active artists in our community. We’ll all meet new friends and new mentors. We’ll have fun creating art together . . . and we’ll have snacks!
Groups will meet for an hour and a half for each of the 12 “early release” Mondays listed in the program schedule below. Students will create their own social agreement concerning attendance and other participation expectations; however, students should expect to attend the program weekly in order to contribute to individual and group projects—this isn’t a drop in program. There is limited space, so signing up sooner is better than later!
The first semester of the Youth ArtWrite Collective will run on Spring 2018 MMSD early release Mondays from January 22 – May 14: Jan 22, 29 // Feb 12, 19 // Mar 5, 19 // April 2, 9, 16, 30 // May 7, 14
